Driftwood Cottage guide to the Overberg

Explore the picturesque Overberg

If you were to draw a circle on a map of the Overberg,
with Napier at the centre and the radius an hour's drive,
you would be amazed at how much there is to see and do.
But that, we would hope, would be after you've worked your
way through everything of interest in Napier itself . . .

Day trips from Napier abound; the roads are quiet and before you know it you're at your destination, whether it be sea or mountains, wine tasting, cheese making, whale watching, great white shark cage diving or just simply a picnic at De Mond nature reserve. Here is a sample of attractions to suit many tastes:

  • The local wine route. See Links.
  • The southernmost tip of Africa where the two oceans meet, Cape Agulhas lighthouse and museum.
  • Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum,  world famous Kapula Candles, the arts and crafts centre.
  • Arniston/Waenhuiskrans, fishermen's cottages (Kassiesbaai) and cave
  • Struisbaai beach, harbour, fresh fish and chips, then on to L'Agulhas.
  • Elim mission village, Geelkop Nature Reserve, arty Baardskeerdersbos
  • Die Kelders, Hermanus, whale watching. Stanford.
  • Reserves: Agulhas National Park; De Hoop Nature and Marine Reserve; De Mond Nature Reserve
  • Hiking trails: Spookdraai (Ghosts' Corner); Grootberg; De Hoop 5-day whale trail; Shipwreck 2-4-day trail.
  • Great white shark diving at Gansbaai
  • Malgas pont and on to Witsand.
  • Caledon, Greyton, Franschhoek.
  • Robertson, McGregor, Breede Valley wine tasting, Montague.
  • Swellendam, Suurbraak, Barrydale, the gateway to the Klein Karoo.

    But if you're travel-weary,
    why not just check in,
    put your feet up . . .
    and enjoy Napier!
